Imphal, October 11, 2021(DIPR): YAS Minister Shri Letpao Haokip today inaugurated a Multipurpose Indoor Hall at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal. In the function, the Minister condemned the divisive politics played by the sports bodies and appealed not to play divisive politics and to work collectively for the promotion of sporting talent of our players.

The construction of the hall that was inaugurated today was started in the year 2015 and construction related works was taken up by the Manipur Development Society (MDS). The total cost of the project is Rupees Three Crores and was funded under the 13th Finance Commission.

The inaugural function was also attended by Shri Bobby Waikhom (IAS), Secretary of YAS; Shri Armstrong Pame (IAS), Director of YAS; top officials of the department and MDS and hundreds of young sports players.

In his speech, Shri Letpao took utmost concern of the declining performances of sporting talents of the state in the national and international events, and expressed worry that if the trend continues, the sports potential of our players will be nib at the bud and the state of Manipur will not be synonymous with ‘Sports Powerhouse’ tag anymore.

He opined that the main reason for decline is the divisive politics played by the sports associations and bodies of almost all the sports disciplines in the state. He earnestly appealed all the sports bodies to let go of their egos and to unite for the collective good of the future of sports for our state. The Minister also added that he has been raising this concern not as a Sports Minister, but as a common citizen of Manipur as the love for sports and the pride one gets when players excel in this field crosses all ranks and status. He appealed that all should work together and unite again to perform well and to regain the level of excellence of our sporting talents.

Talking about the project inaugurated today, Shri Letpao urged the players to obtain maximum benefit and to maintain the facility properly and responsibly and not to negligently utilise it as has been done in most government properties. He expressed his hope that such new infrastructures will help in producing more legends such as Mary Kom and Sanjita Chanu. Other minor shortcomings such as keeping a girls’ changing room and iron grills to the windows will be put up soon, he assured.

YAS Secretary Shri Bobby Waikhom and Director Shri Armstrong, in their speeches, said that the inauguration is a positive development in the sports history of the state, and said that the hall will highly benefit the players.(DIPR)
